Depending on what you want done, I paint with powder and wet paint. With bikes, and anything that can be really, I strongly recommend powder. It’s durability is very hard to match and it actually has some very nice color choices. If you are looking for something that is more intricate, wet paint is hard to beat.
With powder I use both Columbia Coatings and Prismatic Powders. They both have nice selections of colors as well as some very cool textured and specialty finishes. Both companies have their color selections online, found at columbiacoatings.com and prismaticpowders.com. Please be aware that colors on a computer screen can appear different than they are in real life. I have a paint book for Columbia and a few paint samples from Prismatic, these are generally a much better representation of the actual color.
With wet paint I use Dupont Nason or Chromabase. Nason is Dupont’s lower level paint, but I find that it works well and one of the big things is that it keeps the cost down. Chroma-base is Dupont’s mid-level wet paint and is a bit more durable. Most colors are available in either level, in a variety of different configurations.
More important than what kind of paint I use though, is the steps I take before and after I paint your bike. Below is a list of the some of the steps I take, and options available, to make sure your bike turns into exactly what you want it to be.
• Full disassembly of your bike*
• All the bikes I paint are media-blasted.
This provides an awesome surface to start with, and it also removes most surface rust.
• Removing or adding braze-ons *
• Modifying old forks to accepts new brakes
• Smoothing out pitting or dents*
• After painting, all bikes are faced & chased so they are ready to be built up
• Frame-Saver to help with internal rust*
• Full assembly of your bike*
